A man has died in a house fire in Hampshire.

The victim, in his 60s, was found dead in Yew Tree Cottage, The Drove, in the Calmore area of Totton.

About 35 firefighters were called shortly after 08:00 BST. Crews said the fire started in the ground floor and spread to the first floor and roof.

A woman was taken to Southampton General Hospital suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke. Five other members of the family escaped.

Hampshire Police have not named the man but have appealed for information.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Det Ch Insp Paul Barton said: "We have begun an investigation into the cause of the fire. We'd like to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area between 7am and 8am today.

"Officers are carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area."

Calmore Road was partially closed because of drifting smoke and residents were warned to keep doors and windows shut.
