Isle of Wight driver spared jail after two die in crash

A driver who caused a crash on the Isle of Wight, killing his girlfriend and another woman, has walked free from court.

Jack Powell's car collided with a Renault Megane in Mersley Down on 2 January, killing his 14-year-old passenger, Kiri-Jade Hodgkinson.

Barbara Ford, 67, a passenger in the Megane, later died in hospital.

Powell, 19, admitted two counts of causing death by careless driving at Newport Crown Court last month.

Powell, of High Street, Sandown, was handed a 12-month community order, ordered to do 250 hours of unpaid work and a given nine-month curfew, following the crash on the Downs Road between Rowlands Lane and Knighton Shute.

He was also banned from driving for five years.
