Suspicious incident in Manor Park Road
A woman and man, both from Southampton, are held by police after being arrested on suspicion of making an explosive device found in the city

Two people are being held by police after an explosive device was found in the garden of a Southampton property.

A 62-year-old Southampton woman was arrested on suspicion of making an explosive device at another address in the city after the incident in Manor Farm Road, Bitterne Park, on Wednesday.

A 41-year-old Southampton man had been arrested earlier in the day on suspicion of the same offence.

Several homes were evacuated following the discovery.

Bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion and the road was closed while the incident was dealt with.

Hampshire Constabulary called it an "isolated incident" and said there was no threat to the public.
