Residents rescued after fire at flats in Southampton

York Close, Southampton Firefighters said they were faced with a "severe fire" on the fourth floor

Residents trapped by a fire in a block of flats in Southampton have been saved by firefighters.

Eleven people were led to safety after the blaze broke out in a flat and communal area at York Close just after 02:00 BST.

It took 58 firefighters almost three hours to bring the fire in the four storey building under control.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said one person was taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

An investigation into the cause is under way.
