Eastleigh lake rescue man dies in hospital

Emergency services at Lakeside Country Park Fire crews and police were involved in initial rescue attempts before specialist divers arrived

A man has died after being pulled from a lake in a Hampshire country park.

The 28-year-old was spotted in the water at Lakeside Country Park, Wide Lane, Eastleigh, at about 12:30 GMT on Monday.

Fire crews and police were involved in a search operation before the man was taken from the water. He was taken to hospital but later died.

A police spokesman said the man had appeared to be attempting to swim in the water.

The 60-acre wetland site, between Southampton and Eastleigh, is made up of restored gravel works.

Two police officers initially went into the water in an attempt to rescue the man, using ropes and helped by colleagues at the side of the lake.

However, because of the water temperature and conditions, they had to withdraw until a specialist diving team arrived.

A police helicopter was also involved in the search operation.
