'Lightning strike' severely damages house in Shirrell Heath

A fire which broke out during a lightning storm has severely damaged a house in a Hampshire village.

The blaze started in the roof of the house in Winters Road, Shirrell Heath, shortly after 20:00 BST on Tuesday.

Five fire engines with 46 firefighters were sent to the blaze, which took six hours to extinguish.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "It may well have been caused by a lightning strike." An investigation is under way.

The roof of the house was destroyed by the fire, with further damage to the first floor.
