Murder probe after man found dead in Southampton street

A murder investigation has begun after the body of a man in his early 30s was found in a street in Southampton.

Police were called shortly after 02:15 BST by the ambulance service after the was found lying in Defender Road, Woolston.

Despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 25-year-old Southampton woman has been arrested in connection with the murder. The area remains cordoned off for a forensic examination.

Detectives believe the man died from head injuries, but a full post-mortem examination is being carried out.

White carrier bag

Det Insp Ellie Hurd said officers wanted to speak to anyone who might have seen the man in the area after 22:30 on Friday.

"He is in his early 30s and was wearing a white sweatshirt with blue lettering across the chest, dark trousers and carrying a white carrier bag.

"I'd also like to thank local residents for their patience and understanding regarding any disruption that has been caused while we conduct vital evidence gathering at the scene.

"There is likely to be police activity in the area for a few days while we continue with our inquiries," she said.
