Basingstoke bookmakers shop raided by man with hammer

Staff were threatened with a hammer during a robbery at a bookmakers shop in Basingstoke.

A man entered the Coral bookmakers in Winchester Street near the Camrose football ground at just before 21:00 BST on Wednesday, police said.

He threatened staff and stole cash. No-one was injured.

The man, who was believed to be carrying a Morrison's carrier bag, left the shop and walked towards Winchester Road and then Elizabeth Road.

Det Con Rod Kenny said: "This robbery happened near a busy stretch of road so people may have seen something that could help this investigation.

"I would also like to appeal specifically to people living in the Elizabeth Road area to contact me if they have found a discarded hammer on the ground or in their garden."
