Isle of Wight man, 97, dies after being hit by lorry

A 97-year-old man has died a week after being hit by a lorry when he fell into the road.

James Cannell fell into the road in the Isle of Wight after becoming ill on 18 July and was struck by a 7.5 tonne DAF truck, suffering multiple injuries.

He was walking along the pavement in Binstead Road, towards Ryde. Mr Cannell died at St Mary's Hospital in Newport shortly after 19:30 BST on Friday.

Hampshire Police are appealing for witnesses.

Relatives of Mr Cannell, from Binstead, said in a statement: "James was a talented musician who worked and played in the band on numerous P&O cruise liners for over 20 years.

"He will be sorely missed."
