A man has been arrested after a lorry was used to ram-raid a jewellery shop before it crashed into a police car.

The lorry and trailer reversed into Parkhouse jewellers in Above Bar Street, Southampton, at about 10:10 GMT where several watches were stolen.

The lorry was driven off, but reversed into a police car which had tried to pull it over in Shirley, causing "substantial damage" but no injuries.

A 54-year-old man from Portsmouth was arrested after the crash.

Annette Phillips, who witnessed the ram-raid, said she initially thought it was an accident but then saw watches being stolen from the shop.

"Everybody was shocked just watching it," she said.

"You don't expect that at this time of the day."

Part of Above Bar Street was closed after the incident.

Police were called at 10:12 GMT and the suspect was arrested at 10:21 GMT after the collision in Shirley Avenue.

Officers could not confirm whether the lorry had been stolen.
