Woman fights off would-be robber with wine bottle

A would-be robber fled empty handed after being hit over the head with a bottle of wine by his intended victim.

The man approached the 55-year-old woman in Barton Croft, Barton-on-Sea, Hampshire.

Before he could steal anything she hit him over the head with a small bottle of wine she was carrying.

The man then pushed her to the floor before fleeing towards Solent Drive. The victim was left shocked but unhurt by the incident.

Police want to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the event, which took place between 18:30 GMT and 19:00 GMT on Friday, or the man following the woman.

Officers are appealing to a middle-aged woman, in a white mid-length coat, who was cycling down Barton Croft at the time to come forward.

The man is described as being in his early 20s, 5ft 7in tall, of a medium build with thick black hair. He was wearing a short black jacket, dark trousers and shoes.
