Man's body found after Isle of Wight van cliff plunge

The body of a man has been found in a van after it plunged off cliffs on the Isle of Wight.

The vehicle ended up in the sea after falling from Culver Cliffs, at about 03:00 BST, but the tide and weather have hampered efforts to retrieve it.

Police said the dead man had been identified as Robert Hayball, aged 20, from Newport.

They were contacted by someone concerned for his welfare after he left his home in the early hours.

Remains under water

Mr Hayball's death was not being treated as suspicious, police said.

He was found close to his van at the bottom of the cliffs after a report that a vehicle went over the edge.

The van remains underwater off the coast of Culver and police said they were considering options for how to recover it.

They said it was not thought to have been carrying anyone else.

Coastguards, the fire and rescue service and the RNLI were also called to the scene in the early hours.
