Isle of Wight van crash kills man

A man died when he was hit by a van on the Isle of Wight.

The pedestrian, aged 82, was trapped under a white Ford Courier van in Freshwater at about 19:00 BST on Friday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene on Copse Lane, which is currently closed, and police are investigating.

The driver of the van, a 75-year-old man from Freshwater, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He was uninjured.

The man's body was taken to hospital where an initial post-mortem examination is due to take place.

Hampshire police are in the process of informing his next of kin and are appealing for witnesses.
