Southampton council appoints 'first' chief scientist

A Hampshire council says it is the first local authority in the country to appoint a chief scientific adviser.

Southampton City Council has given Prof AbuBakr Bahaj the unpaid role in partnership with the university.

The professor of sustainable energy is expected to ensure the city uses science effectively in its policies.

He will provide the council with expertise on environmental issues, such as the energy efficiency of buildings.

Prof Bahaj is head of the energy and climate change division at the University of Southampton.
