Sandbanks ferry suspended after ramp fails

Sandbanks chain ferry A mechanical problem with the lifting ramp forced the ferry out of action

A ferry across the entrance to Poole Harbour in Dorset was out of action for seven hours after one of its lifting ramps failed.

Sandbanks chain ferry, which links Poole with Swanage, was halted at 11:00 BST after the lifting prow developed a fault.

Bournemouth Swanage Motor Road and Ferry Company said services resumed at 18:00 BST following emergency repairs.

The crossing can cut up to 25 miles off drivers' journeys around Poole Harbour.
