A man has been fined after his two dogs were shot dead by a farmer as they attacked his sheep in the New Forest.

Five sheep were attacked by the owner's Collie Cross and Setter and two sheep had to be destroyed. Three more were injured.

Hampshire Constabulary said the man accepted full responsibility and paid the farmer £855 in compensation.

Country Watch Sgt Louise Hubble said: "This is a tragic case in which there are no winners."

She added: "This case involved two pet dogs who were not bred or trained for hunting but displayed natural behaviour when the opportunity was provided.

"The dog owner has not only had to pay a financial penalty, but has also paid the ultimate penalty with the death of his two pet dogs."

Police said the farmer initially attempted to scare the dogs off with a warning shot and that legislation allowed him to protect his sheep.
