A murder inquiry has begun following the discovery of a body in an industrial bin in Southampton.

The body was found by firefighters dealing with a fire in a bin on the Empress Road Industrial Estate at 03:00 BST.

A post-mortem examination is being carried out. Police said they were making "urgent inquiries" to identify the victim.

Thomas Lewis Way has been closed near to the junction with Empress Road.

Det Insp Simon Baker said: "We are pursuing many lines of inquiry to identify the person or persons responsible for this really serious crime".

He said the condition of the body was "hampering" the identification.

The bin has been removed as part of the investigation and a fingertip search of the area is being carried out.

Hampshire police have appealed for information from anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area.
