Carbon fibre jet engine plant opens on Isle of Wight

Engineers on the Isle of Wight are developing a unique non-metal engine which is claimed could dramatically cut the amount of fuel used by airlines.

Minister for Small Businesses and Enterprise Mark Prisk unveiled a £15m research plant for GKN in Cowes, saying it held the prospect of many new jobs.

The new technology uses carbon-fibre blades which the company says could make jet engines lighter and cheaper to run.
