Woman dies after falling from bridge on A31 at Ringwood

A woman has died after falling from a bridge on the A31 in Hampshire into the path of oncoming traffic.

Police were called to near the Ringwood junction with the A338 for Salisbury at about 0440 BST on Wednesday.

Rebecca Mae Wheeler, 41, lived in the Ringwood area. She was divorced and did voluntary work. Her family has been informed.

Ms Wheeler was hit by several vehicles and was pronounced dead at the scene. An inquest will open shortly.

The road was shut eastbound causing major traffic tailbacks during the morning rush-hour. Drivers had been diverted along minor roads through to the M27.

Insp Kirsty Shannon, from Hampshire police, said: "This appears to be a very tragic incident."
