A murder inquiry has been started after a woman was found stabbed to death inside a Southampton flat.

Police were called to Napier House in Paynes Road in the Shirley area of the city in the early hours, following reports of a "domestic incident".

The body of Anita Bawtree, 34, was found by officers who gained entry into the property just before midnight.

A 54-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently being questioned by police.

He was detained at the scene.

Specialist officers, including negotiators, were sent to the modern block of flats.

The entrance to the flats was cordoned off by police as forensic officers carried out a search of the scene.

A Ford Focus car was towed away from outside.

Det Ch Insp Chris Fitchet said: "No-one else is currently being sought in connection with the incident.

"Local residents should be aware that officers will be patrolling in the area should they have any concerns."
