Developers have begun preparing to demolish the former Odeon cinema in Cheltenham.

Work to make the site safe including the removal of asbestos is taking place prior to the demolition beginning at the end of the month.

Site owner Leckhampton Estates plans to redevelop the Winchcombe Street plot into shops and homes.

The cinema, which was built in 1933, was shut in 2006 after falling into disrepair.

In its heyday the venue saw appearances from bands such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

The development work is being carried out by Crest Nicholson.
