Gloucester Cathedral redevelopment plans go on display

College Green would be made car-free under the new proposals

Plans to redevelop parts of Gloucester Cathedral have gone on public display.

The cathedral's chapter wants to improve facilities, including building a new South Porch entrance and creating a car-free area in College Green.

The project will cost about £8m and take up to five years to complete, a spokesperson said.

Members of the public have been asked to share their views on the plans for Project Pilgrim, which have gone on display in the cathedral.

The scheme also includes plans to install a new font, relocate the gift shop and build a new glass-roofed cafe at the medieval building.

The Lady Chapel will also be cleaned and a new heating system installed and the 14th Century Parliament Rooms will be opened to the public.

The Dean of Gloucester, The Very Reverend Stephen Lake, said: "This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity.

"Project Pilgrim seeks to work out in practical terms what it means to be in tune with heaven and in touch with daily life."
