Gloucester airgun shooting leaves girl, 15, injured

A 15-year-old girl suffered a collapsed lung when she was shot in the back with an airgun.

It happened in the Matson area of Gloucester on Sunday afternoon, police said.

A 16-year-old boy, who knows the girl, was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

The weapon, which does not require a firearms licence, has been seized by police. The girl has now been discharged from hospital.

She had been taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital before being transferred to the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Back garden

The teenager was discharged on Monday afternoon, officers said.

Insp Neil Smith, from Gloucestershire Police, said: "This incident involved two young people who knew each other, which took place in the back garden of a house.

"I can understand people will be concerned, but there is no reason to believe this is indicative of a wider problem.

"The suspect in this case was quickly arrested and we are conducting a full and thorough investigation.

"I can assure local people that we are taking this very seriously."

The boy has been bailed pending further inquiries over the shooting, but remains in police custody in relation to other, unrelated, matters, the force said.
