Stroud District Council looks to scrap its cabinet-led system

A council in Gloucestershire is looking whether to scrap its cabinet in favour of a committee-led system.

After last month's elections, Stroud District Council was left as a hung authority with no one party having an overall majority.

Currently an alliance between the Liberal Democrats, the Greens and Labour is running the council.

Council leader Geoff Wheeler (Lab) has said he hopes the new system will be in place by next year.

"It's more democratic, because more people will be involved. It's more transparent, the sessions will be held in public - essentially it's an open process.

"It will make each councillor more responsible for those policies and more transparent and there will be a more direct relationship between the public and how the council operates," said Mr Wheeler.
