A dog, which bit a 12-year-old girl and a man, has been shot dead by police in a Gloucestershire park.

Officers were called to Despenser Road, Tewkesbury, following reports of a "large dog dangerously out of control".

When police arrived at 12:00 BST the animal attempted to bite them, a force spokeswoman said.

Officers used a Taser to try to control the animal but it ran off to Prior's Park where it was Tasered twice more before it was shot by a marksman.

Officers had chased the dog for approximately half a mile.

'Chunk' of flesh

"There were a number of members of the public, including children, in the park so in order to maintain public safety the decision was taken to destroy the dog using a shotgun," the force spokeswoman said.

Police are trying to trace the owner.

Insp Joseph Tierney said the dog took a "chunk" of flesh from the man's thigh, but added his injuries were not believed to be life-changing or life-threatening.

"The dog drew blood and was obviously attacking various people," he said.

"The animal was heading back towards a populated area after coming out into the playing fields. It was at this moment the officers felt they had the opportunity to stop the dog.

"Obviously when they discharged the firearm there wasn't any risk at all that if they missed they would hit a member of the public or even if the cartridges passed through the dog that there was any risk they would enter someone else."

The girl was treated by paramedics at the scene for a dog bite but there are no further details of her injuries.
