Three women accused of abusing residents at an Essex care home have appeared in court.

Adeshola Adediwura, 32, Lorna Clark, 44, and Anita Ray, 45, all from Braintree, are accused of assaulting and harassing elderly people at the Old Deanery in the town.

Essex Police began its investigation into alleged abuse following a BBC Panorama programme about the home.

The women will appear at Chelmsford Crown Court at a later date.

Ms Adediwura, of Clockhouse Way, has been charged with two counts of beating and one of harassment without violence.

The offences all involved an Old Deanery resident and occurred between October 2013 and February this year.

'Harsh and oppressive'

Ms Clark, from Hammond Place, faces one count of assault and two of harassment without violence.

It is alleged the care she provided to a number of residents was "degrading, humiliating and distressing in nature and also harsh and oppressive causing them pain, alarm and distress".

Ms Ray, of Victoria Street, has been charged with one count of assault and three of harassment without violence, involving seven residents.

The women, who appeared at Colchester Magistrates' Court, did not enter any pleas.
