Witham aluminium factory is evacuated in 'major blaze'

Amtek Aluminium in Freebournes Road, Witham Staff were moved out of the factory in Witham after the fire broke out in the early hours of the morning

A factory building was evacuated after a "major blaze" spread from an extraction unit to the walls and roof.

The fire at Amtek Aluminium in Freebournes Road, Witham, started at about 04:00.

It was the 36th incident dealt with by crews during the 24-hour Fire Brigades' Union strike.

The fire was out by 06:30. A joint police and fire service investigation is under way into the cause of the fire.

A spokesman for the fire service said crews had to "work quickly" to prevent fire spreading because the 100m (328ft) by 50m (164ft) site was "made up of a number of smaller buildings all linked together".
