Two former firefighters are to appear in court after an investigation into claims of institutional abuse.

The men have been summonsed to Basildon Magistrates' Court over allegations of misconduct in public office.

The summonses follow an Essex Police probe into allegations of criminal offences at Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.

Anthony Benham, 49, from Stanford-le-Hope and Ian Maguire, 55, from Benfleet will be at court on 17 July.

The alleged offences relate to the former Tilbury Fire Station during the 1980s and 1990s.

A spokeswoman for Essex Police said detectives had "interviewed more than 100 people in this large and complex investigation".

A file was prepared for the Crown Prosecution Service's complex casework unit after police were called in when concerns were raised last June.

Martin Sibley, a 48-year-old firefighter with 24 years of experience, was found hanged at his home in Colchester after being interviewed as part of the investigation.
