Essex fire crews rescue cows at Althorne

A pair of cows had to be rescued after an accident left them upside down en-route to an abattoir.

The trailer ended up on its roof following a crash on the Burnham Road in Althorne, near Burnham, at about 10:30 GMT.

The road was temporarily closed and both the RSPCA and Essex Police were called in to help.

Essex Fire and Rescue Service said the cows were freed and put on another trailer.

Station Officer Dave Moore said when the trailer was rotated on to its side, the two cows "simply walked out" into a second trailer.

A spokeswoman for the RSPCA said the cows showed no obvious signs of injury but would be assessed by a vet once they reached their destination.
