Body found in burning car in Seevic College car park
A body of a man has been found in a burning car by firefighters at a college in Essex.
Crews were called to a car park at Seevic College on Runnymeade Chase, Benfleet at about 17:00 GMT on Thursday following reports of an explosion.
The body was found in the car after firefighters extinguished the blaze. The man, who police said was thought to be in his 40s, has not been identified.
An investigation has begun into the cause of the fire.
Seevic College principal Nick Spenceley said the car had driven into the car park "and shortly afterwards caught fire".
"Myself and several staff members were on the scene within 30 seconds, and the fire and ambulance services arrived within minutes.
"No college students or staff are believed to have been involved and, as far as I am aware, the individual had no connection with Seevic College."
"I would like to express my deep sympathy for the family and friends affected by this tragic incident."
A minute's silence will be held at the college as a mark of respect and Mr Spenceley said staff would be available to support students with any concerns.
