Essex Police close road over tangled Benfleet balloon

Police sealed off a road amid concerns a tangled advertising balloon might have brought down a lamp-post.

The 16ft (5m) wide balloon had been flying over an Essex store.

But as it came down on Sunday evening, the lines became stuck around a street lamp in Benfleet Road, Benfleet, making the post unstable.

Marc Diggory, Essex Fire and Rescue's station officer, said: "One big gust of wind could have brought the lamp-post down across the road."

Fire crews secured the balloon using their own lines and then cut the tangled lines with a knife.
