A man crashed his black BMW convertible car into a pub building in Essex.

The driver also hit a telegraph pole before driving into the Kings Arms in Lawford, near Colchester, at about 05:00 BST.

Essex Police said the driver, who was seriously injured, had to be freed from his vehicle before being taken to Ipswich Hospital.

Police later arrested a 26-year-old man at nearby Manningtree on suspicion of drink-driving.

Officers have appealed for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.

The road was closed while emergency services worked at the scene. Electricians and a structural engineer were also called.

A planning application is currently with Tendring District Council to turn the former public house, which stopped trading in 2012, into a home.
