Senior members of Essex County Council have agreed an "immediate" 3% cut in their allowances.

The voluntary move will only affect the authority's decision-making body, the cabinet.

The council's new leader David Finch said the allowance cut was a "contribution" to the £215m savings the council needed to make by 2016/17.

In his case, the drop will mean his £53,000 allowance will drop by £1,590.

Overall, the reduction will see £11,283 taken off the cabinet's annual £376,105 special responsibility allowance bill.

Mr Finch said: "The next four years will require difficult decisions."
