M25 fatal crash in Essex: lorry driver remanded

A lorry driver has been remanded in custody after being charged over the death of a car driver in a 10-vehicle accident on the M25 in Essex.

Four lorries and six cars were involved in the collision at Aveley, closing the clockwise carriageway for nine hours on Tuesday.

A 79-year-old man died at the scene.

Anton Maizen, 58, from Darmstadt, Germany, was remanded in custody by Basildon magistrates charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He is also charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Mr Maizen will appear at Basildon Crown Court on 12 April.

The dead man, who is yet to be named, was driving a Renault Clio.

His son, who is 58 and was his passenger, and a 47-year-old woman who was driving a Mercedes, were injured and are being treated at the Royal London Hospital.
