Supermarket Tesco is restructuring its distribution system in the UK with the closure of three centres and the transfer of 2,000 jobs.

The supermarket said the posts would be moved to two new centres in Berkshire and London.

Centres to close are Harlow in Essex with the loss of 800 jobs, Barlborough near Chesterfield where 400 people work and Weybridge in Surrey with 650 staff.

Magor in Monmouthshire which employs 800 people will be cutting 150 staff.

'Broken promises'

The Usdaw union national officer Joanne McGuinness said: "This is absolutely devastating news for our members and their families.

"Usdaw will be entering into a 90-day consultation with Tesco to explore all possible options to reduce any job losses."

The new centres will be at Reading in Berkshire and Dagenham in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

The company says all those people whose current jobs are being lost will be offered new employment within Tesco.

A spokesperson said: "We've been reviewing our distribution network, and have confirmed plans to close some of our current distribution centres and open new ones.

"Colleagues who are affected will be offered jobs at other Tesco sites, including at the two new distribution sites in Reading and Dagenham, where 2,000 jobs will be created."

Tony Durcan, a Labour county councillor for Harlow, accused Tesco of "broken promises" and said there had been assurances that the new Dagenham depot would not impact on Harlow.
