The Princess Royal joined survivors and rescuers at Chelmsford Cathedral in Essex at a service to commemorate the Great Flood of 1953.
Princess Anne read from the Gospel of St John before the Bishop of Bradwell spoke of the "remarkable" human spirit that was shown during the disaster.
Among the congregation were relatives of those who died, survivors and many who fought to save lives.
