Basildon nurse accused over commode patient

A nurse has been accused of failing to "observe patient dignity" after allegedly pulling open the curtains of a patient using a commode.

It is one of a number of accusations made against Shoy Kuriakose while employed by Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital NHS Trust between July 2006 and April 2009.

A hearing at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is to start on Monday.

The case, which will be heard in London, is expected to last four days.

Mr Kuriakose is accused of failing to "demonstrate the standards of knowledge, skill and judgment" in a number of areas including record keeping, basic nursing care and observations.

The charges against him include an incident in October 2008 in which he allegedly opened "the curtains on a patient who was using the commode enabling the public and other patients to see the patient".

He has also been accused of completing a "discharge assessment of needs form for the wrong patient" and allowing a patient to lay "on a bed of dry urine for an unacceptable period of time."

The hearing is expected to take place at the NMC in Aldwych on Monday and Tuesday, at Portland Place on Wednesday and in Tottenham Court Road on Thursday.
