Children who hurled a brick from a road bridge have been labelled "stupid and dangerous" by police after the window of a van travelling at speed was smashed.

The incident happened at the Halstead footbridge on the A12 at Colchester at 15:01 BST on Thursday.

The driver of the blue VW van was not injured.

A police spokesman said: "It could very easily have resulted in serious injuries or even death."

Three or four children or young people were seen by the driver on the Halstead bridge.

The police spokesman said: "We will make every effort to find and bring to justice those young people who did this, not least to deter anyone else from doing something so very, very stupid and dangerous."
