Ex-slaughtermen admit pig cruelty at Essex abattoir
Two former slaughtermen from Essex could face jail after being secretly filmed attacking pigs.
Piotr Andrzej Wasiuta, 29, from Southend, and Kelly Smith, 40, from Benfleet, admitted animal cruelty charges at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court.
The pair worked for Cheale Meats, at Orchard Farm, in Little Warley, Essex, at the time of the offences, in March and April 2011.
They will be sentenced on 25 April.
The court heard Wasiuta was seen stubbing a lit cigarette on pigs' snouts three times in the CCTV footage.
Smith twice used excessive force to strike pigs with a baton.
Wasiuta admitted three charges, while Smith pleaded guilty to two charges.
They were both accused of causing unnecessary suffering to a pig under the Animal Welfare Act.
The offences emerged after an investigator from animal rights group Animal Aid placed a covert camera on the site.
Bench chairman Jeffrey Manton said the pair could be jailed when sentenced.
