Billericay Town player Nicky Morgan in intensive care

A non-league footballer remains seriously ill in hospital after being assaulted outside an Essex nightclub.

Billericay Town goalkeeper Nicky Morgan, 25, was taken to Queen's Hospital in Romford in the early hours of Friday morning with a neck injury.

His club said his condition had "improved slightly" over the weekend, but he was unable to move his legs.

Essex Police said they were investigating an altercation between 10 men behind the Sugar Hut in Brentwood.

A statement on the Ryman Premier League club's website said Mr Morgan had movement in his arms and toes, but it was still too early to assess the full extent of his injuries.

He is due to have an operation to reduce pressure on his spine.

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: "Essex Police are investigating an assault on a man in his 20s from Loughton, following a disturbance at the rear of a nightclub.

"Police were called by the ambulance service at just after 02:30 BST on Friday, to William Hunter Way at the rear of the Sugar Hut.

"It's believed the altercation involved a group of 10 men. Officers are looking at CCTV."
