Arrests over historic wreck theft in Thames Estuary

One man, 44, was arrested in Dover, Kent, and the second man, 54, was arrested at a marina in Gravesend

Two men have been arrested in connection with the theft of items from a historic wreck in the Thames Estuary.

The men were arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of stealing a cannon and other items from the remains of the warship HMS London.

The ship exploded and sank off Southend, Essex, in 1665.

One man, 44, was arrested in Dover, Kent, and the second man, 54, was arrested at a marina in Gravesend.

Both men are currently being interviewed at a police station in Kent.

Police officers from Essex and Kent working with officials from English Heritage and the Receiver of Wreck have been involved in the investigation.
