Three remanded over suspected sham wedding in Essex

A 28-year-old Dutch bride, her groom and a witness, both from Nigeria, have been remanded in custody over a suspected sham wedding in Essex.

Police and immigration officers stopped a wedding at St John's Church, Tilbury, on Tuesday and arrested them.

Roqsilmar Marti, of Rotterdam, Abdallah Magezi, 35, of Plumstead, London, and Abraham Akinola, 32, of Tilbury, appeared before Basildon magistrates.

All were charged with conspiring to facilitate breaches of immigration law.

The groom was also charged with possessing a false identity document and escaping from lawful custody.

The witness is also charged with remaining in the UK beyond a time limit, possessing a false identity document and making a false declaration to procure marriage.
