Fire has destroyed an area of heathland on an army range on the Dorset coast.

About half a mile of heathland at Five Tips Lulworth Ranges was destroyed in the blaze, which began at about 21:45 BST on Tuesday.

By 23:30 BST seven fire engines, two off-road fire engines and four Land Rover pumps were at the army site.

It took 60 firefighters over four hours to tackle the blaze using beaters and foam from a specialist off road appliance.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The army firing ranges at Lulworth start near the east side of Lulworth Cove and run through to Kimmeridge.
