Search for missing ship's container off Lyme Bay

A coastguard plane is searching a stretch of the Dorset coast for a missing cargo container which could pose a risk to shipping.

The container went overboard as a tug was towing pipes into Portland Harbour.

Philip Chappell of Portland Coastguard said: "We're trying to trace whether it's sunk or not. If semi-submerged it represents a hazard to shipping."

The container was last seen bobbing 16ft (5m) above the water line in Lyme Bay.

Tugs have also been sent to assist the aircraft which is using sonar to detect the obstacle.
