New Asda supermarket in Christchurch 'to create almost 400 jobs'

Hundred of jobs are to be created at a former Ministry of Defence site in Dorset with the opening of a new Asda supermarket, developers have said.

The redevelopment of the former QinetiQ site on Bailey Drive, Christchurch, was granted outline planning permission by the borough council in June.

As well as a 5,000 sq m (55,000 sq ft) food store, a fitness facility and homes were also approved.

Quantum Group said the store was likely to open in 2015, creating 375 jobs.

More than 100 "additional construction roles" will also be created to develop the site over the next 18 months, the developer said.

It also said it had agreed to invest £1m in a new non-for-profit organisation, The Christchurch Foundation Trust.

The trust aims to work with residents and businesses "to generate funds and opportunities that support Christchurch's economic, social and environmental growth", it added.
