Missing Weymouth care home man in hospital after search

A 62-year-old man has been airlifted to hospital after his disappearance 24 hours earlier from a Weymouth care home sparked a major search.

Coastguard teams including the search and rescue helicopter were involved in the operation on Friday night.

Using heat-seeking equipment, the crew located the man in remote marshland near the Lodmoor RSPB bird reserve.

The helicopter winched the man to safety, he was then taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia.

A coastguard spokesperson said the man "was very distressed, incapacitated and cold" and found among rough ground near open drainage channels.
