Charlton Marshall gas leak as car hits roadworks

Residents had to be evacuated from their homes following a gas leak caused by a car driving into some roadworks on the A350 in Dorset.

The crash at Charlton Marshall, involving a 68-year-old man from Poole, damaged the gas main causing it to leak at about 23:00 BST on Monday.

Five houses were evacuated as a precaution. The leak was stopped by about 03:00 on Tuesday.

A cordon was put in place around the collision scene. No-one was injured.

The 100m (330ft) cordon covered 60 properties in the areas of Green Close, Meadow Road and May Grove - although these homes were not evacuated.

Road closures were put in place at Spetisbury, between Blandford and Charlton Marshall, and at the Parkhill Junction of the A350, while Dorset Fire Service and Southern Gas Networks dealt with the leak.
