A new £1.2m science and technology education centre has been opened at a Bournemouth college.

The centre at Bournemouth and Poole College will specialise in the so-called "stem" subjects - science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Facilities include new laboratories and teaching areas.

Principal Lawrence Vincent said: "It's our responsibility to train young people for the global job market."

He added that despite the economic climate, the high skills jobs which are available are in the "stem" subjects.

The college is also working with local industry to offer placements to students.

Ben Clarke, of Superior Seals in Ferndown, one of the companies involved, said: "There is a skills shortage, we need to be creating more opportunities for young people to get their careers going.

"This centre will show employers what young people can do."
