Colehill street lights to remain on in traffic calming zones

Traffic calming zones will remain lit throughout the night in one area of Dorset, despite a countywide switch-off of street lighting.

Dorset County Council had planned to turn off all streetlights in Colehill between midnight and 05:30 GMT.

The authority estimates the scheme will save £150,000 and reduce emissions.

But it has now decided to allow lighting in the town on road narrowing traffic calming measures, following local opposition.

Janet Dover, Lib Dem county councillor for Colehill, had described the plans as "unacceptable".

A permanent switch-off of night-time street lighting is being rolled out following a trial last year, in areas including Weymouth, Sherborne and Shaftesbury.

Town centres and what the council describes as "high-risk areas" will remain lit all night.

Lighting on speed humps is exempt from the switch-off but all other traffic calming measures in the county had been included.
