Swanage coastline warning after further landslip

The area was being assessed to see if there is any risk to property

Heavy rain has caused a "significant" landslip on the Dorset coast for the second day running.

Portland Coastguard said a new fall had been reported by its rescue team on the northern part of Swanage Beach.

Watch officer Malcolm Wright said: "They could see material falling down and they indicated a level of alarm."

The agency said coastguard rescue teams, along with police and firefighters, had been sent to establish the extent of the fall.

Mr Wright said: "We've got cliff material that is saturated with water - under that extra weight, and with the water acting as a lubricant, it's slipping away.

"We're trying to establish whether any properties and their gardens back on to this area. Assessment is ongoing to see whether there is any risk to property."

The first landslip, near the Grand Hotel in Swanage, was reported by Portland Coastguard on Friday at about 16:00 GMT.

Walkers in the area are being urged to heed warning signs.
